Three-dimensional seismic response analysis of a concrete-faced rockfill dam on overburden layers

Dakuo FENG, Ga ZHANG, Jianmin ZHANG,

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2010, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 258-266 doi: 10.1007/s11709-010-0031-4

Abstract: Reasonable seismic response analysis of a high rockfill dam is of great engineering significance in guiding its design and ensuring its seismic safety during operation, especially of a concrete-faced rockfill dam (CFRD) on overburden layers. The three-dimensional seismic behavior of the Miaojiaba CFRD is simulated and analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). The results indicate that: 1) the amplification coefficient along the dam axis gradually increases with the altitude, and reaches maximum at the dam crest; 2) the vertical residual deformation mainly exhibits downwards and reaches maximum near the dam crest; 3) the earthquake significantly aggravates the deformation of peripheral joints; 4) the impounding condition and overburden characteristics have great effects on the dam’s seismic response.

Practical optimization of deployable and scissor-like structures using a fast GA method

M. SALAR, M. R. GHASEMI, B. DIZANGIAN

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2019, Volume 13, Issue 3,   Pages 557-568 doi: 10.1007/s11709-018-0497-z

Abstract: This paper addresses practical sizing optimization of deployable and scissor-like structures from a new point of view. These structures have been recently highly regarded for beauty, lightweight, determine behavior, proper performance against lateral loads and the ability of been compactly packaged. At this time, there is a few studies done considering practical optimization of these structures. Loading considered here includes wind and gravity loads. In foldable scissor-like structures, connections have a complex behavior. For this reason, in this study, the authors used the ABAQUS commercial package as an analyzer in the optimization procedure. This made the obtained optimal solutions highly reliable from the point of view of applicability and construction requirements. Also, to do optimization task, a fast genetic algorithm method, which has been recently introduced by authors, was utilized. Optimization results show that despite less weight for aluminum models than steel models, aluminum deployable structures are not affordable because they need more material than steel structures and cause more environmental damage.

Moisture Absorption and Desorption in an Ionomer-Based Encapsulant: A Type of Self-Breathing Encapsulant for CIGS Thin-Film PV Modules Article

Miao Yang, Raymund Schäffler, Tobias Repmann, Kay Orgassa

Engineering 2020, Volume 6, Issue 12,   Pages 1403-1407 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2020.02.020

Abstract:

As an alternative to conventional encapsulation concepts for a double glass photovoltaic (PV) module, we introduce an innovative ionomer-based multi-layer encapsulant, by which the application of additional edge sealing to prevent moisture penetration is not required. The spontaneous moisture absorption and desorption of this encapsulant and its raw materials, poly (ethylene-co-acrylic acid) and an ionomer, are analyzed under different climatic conditions in this work. The relative air humidity is thermodynamically the driving force for these inverse processes and determines the corresponding equilibrium moisture content (EMC). Higher air humidity results in a larger EMC. The homogenization of the absorbed water molecules is a diffusion-controlled process, in which temperature plays a dominant role. Nevertheless, the diffusion coefficient at a higher temperature is still relatively low. Hence, under normal climatic conditions for the application of PV modules, we believe that the investigated ionomer-based encapsulant can "breathe" the humidity: During the day, when there is higher relative humidity, it "inhales" (absorbs) moisture and restrains it within the outer edge of the module; then at night, when there is a lower relative humidity, it "exhales" (desorbs) the moisture. In this way, the encapsulant protects the cell from moisture ingress.
